At Nintendo’s E3 show, the latest Legend of Zelda title was showcased to the world and not only does it looks absolutely gorgeous, but it’s going to introduce some new gameplay elements to the iconic series.  The trailer begins with a lady’s voice telling link to “open his eyes” and to “wake up”.  It’s unclear at this time whether this voice belongs to Princess Zelda or Navi.

Entitled Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will release for the Wii U and the forthcoming NX, though no release date has been announced as of yet.  It will however introduce new weapons and abilities that we’ve not yet seen before in the series.  Link will now be able to climb cliffs, use stealth tactics to bring down his enemies and he’ll even be wearing a new armour plate.

With him will be Link’s ever faithful sword, and bow & arrow, but now he’ll be able to use weapons such as spears (not of the Bill Goldberg variety sadly), axes, which can not only be used as a weapon, but he’ll also be able to chop down trees to cross streams and so forth.

Judging from what we’ve seen in the trailer, there will be some survival elements to the game, as well as the use of stealth and chopping down trees to access certain areas (as already mentioned).  Link will now also be able to start grass fires, which could be used to take-out a large group of enemies and he’ll now be able to cook meals.  I’d expect the cooking aspect would be used to refill his life-bar, but it’s also possible that Link might be able to cook up his own potions, which would be very cool indeed.

It was largely rumoured that the new Legend of Zelda game would feature a new female Link, which as we now know isn’t the case.  However, Nintendo did reveal that they had strongly considered having a female Link or even having Princess Zelda as the main playable character.  As much as I love Link, I am very intrigued to see how the game would have differed, if we had Princess Zelda as the lead, perhaps that can be something Nintendo might consider for future Legend of Zelda titles.
