With the reveal of the PS5 console price and release date at the PlayStation 5 event, Sony has also confirmed a price increase on some of their SIE Worldwide Studios titles.  Now these are only RRP’s (Recommended Retail Prices), and it is likely that many retailers will sell them for less, though we know there are some big videogame retailers that will take advantage of the RRP price hike.

The most notable RRP is for the Demon’s Souls remake from BluePoint Games, which has a hefty £69.99 and that’s for a standard edition.  Other confirmed PS5 exclusives to have a £69.99 RRP is Destruction All-Stars and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Edition.  However, the latter does include a remaster of PS4’s Marvel’s Spider-Man with all previously released DLC, which is great value to me.

While other titles such as Sackboy A Big Adventure comes in at £59.99 and the standard edition of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales has an RRP of £51.99.  But I would say that the most eye-catching price is that of Demons Souls.  And I know that we the can use the case of inflation and how much games cost back in the day, but we’re also in an age where games are more profitable than ever before and the videogame industry makes more money than any other form of entertainment.  Then you add the fact that digital sales are on the rise, which drastically reduces production cost and results in added profit.

Perhaps if micro-transactions were taken out of the high priced RRP titles, that would be fair, but we know that certain publishers will not do that, because as a business, they will use this price hike to make even more profit.  Big company CEO’s will be rubbing their hands in delight and licking their lips at the prospect of taking advantage of a next-gen RRP price hike on games with heavy forms of monetisation whether it be in-game purchased, season passes, battle passes and more thrown in on top.

However, again and to be somewhat optimistic, these are only RRP’s and some retailers will no doubt sell them for less, especially if they get competitive. But don’t expect any form of competition from digital launch prices from your platforms digital store, other then sales long after launch.
