A new trailer marked the release of the tactical RPG Grand Kingdom yesterday.

The team building, turn based game developed by Monochrome and published by NIS America, features on both PS4 and Vita.

Set on the continent of Resonail, the empire has collapsed, and four great nations are now warring for control of the land.

As a team of mercenaries, you will dive into the conflict, offering your services to each of these four nations.

The website describes the game as follows:

“Travel distant lands rendered in beautiful 2D art, and use your personally-trained mercenary squad to improve your military gains. Take part in an exciting single-player campaign as you unravel the mystery behind the Uldein Empire’s collapse, or play online and participate in continental warfare between the Four Great Nations. Pledge your loyalty and conquer the realm, or pursue your own desires. The choice is entirely up to you.”

It sounds like there’s a bit of choice making involved, and I certainly agree with the “beautiful 2D art” – it is a rather colourful looking game.

As for gameplay, placing units and objects into formations, and utilising skills and abilities is the order of the day, and hiring and training units with varying skills looks to be important strategising.

The online mode sounds very interesting as well, with you being able to pledge your loyalty to one of the four nations, fighting alongside others to try and control regions and take victory. It actually comes across as a very deep online component, with features such as voting – involving voting on which regions to attack, and what treaties to enact (offering effects in the next war such as upgrading the power of armaments) – and also researching and developing new equipment, providing resources to your nation, national shops, and so on. I’d recommend taking a look at the website for more info on this – it does look pretty compelling.

Take a look at the launch trailer below as well as some of the screenshots. Grand Kingdom is out now on PS4 and Vita.
