One of the numerous announcements from the Xbox Series X reveal the other day was a return to one of Xbox’s most loved and also derided series.

Fable is getting a reboot – this announcement revealed in a minute long cinematic trailer.

Of all the ways they could revive the Fable series, a reboot seems to make the most sense. It’s been a while since the last main entry Fable III (there’s been 4 spin offs since which I won’t count), and this has left somewhat of a soured legacy, despite initial positive reviews from critics. The previously planned Fable Legends was mercifully canned – this “games as a service” Fable possibly being the best way to ruin the series forever.

It’s an interesting concept because Lionhead Studios is no more, the development of this reboot now being in the hands of Playground Games, the studio famous for the Forza series, so it will be interesting to see their take on this.

The trailer shows no gameplay whatsoever, though the very familiar Jasper voice (it is John Cleese, right? Or at least someone trying to sound like him) is a great throwback and it’s clear that the game’s trademark humour is still present.

The game is being released on Xbox Series X and PC, with a release date to be confirmed.
