Breaking: Sony Gives a Go Ahead for Cross-Platform Cross-Play

After massive push from fans and gamers from around the world, looks like Sony has finally caved in and will start testing the waters with an open beta for Fortnite that will allow for cross-platform gameplay, allowing PS4, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and PC players to play against/with each other.

Sony had this to say in the official blog post which broke this news:

For 24 years, we have strived to deliver the best gaming experience to our fans by providing a uniquely PlayStation perspective. Today, the communities around some games have evolved to the point where cross-platform experiences add significant value to players. In recognition of this, we have completed a thorough analysis of the business mechanics required to ensure that the PlayStation experience for our users remains intact today, and in the future, as we look to open up the platform.

 

This represents a major policy change for SIE, and we are now in the planning process across the organization to support this change. We will update the community once we have more details to share, including more specifics regarding the beta timeframe, and what this means for other titles going forward.

Microsoft and Android were already enjoying cross-play before, but Sony’s step towards cross-play means big things for the future as all the major players in the gaming business are now opening roads for players across platforms. It is now left to see whether this commitment will continue long after Fortnite or if it will be forgotten once the Battle Royale phase is over. It would definitely be interesting to see this level of cross-play on most major multiplayer games that will truly let players play on the platform of their choice.
