DOOM (1993) and DOOM II Are Getting Content Updates!

Last year, Bethesda and id Software re-released DOOM (1993) and DOOM II on current-gen systems.  Previously, these were quite standard re-releases at 35fps and to be honest, didn’t offer all that much more to what I already own with my Xbox One backwards compatibility versions from the Xbox 360.

However, a recently released update may change my stance on whether it’s now worth picking both re-releases up (at the right price).  The free update not only bumps up the framerate to 60fps, but we will also be getting add-on support with community created mods, which includes the likes of John Romero’s “unofficial” fifth DOOM episode which adds nine new singleplayer stages and nine new multiplayer maps.  The additional content can be found via a curated list from the main menu, with more being added in the near future.

New quality of life improvements have also been made, such as a Quick Save function being activated by pressing the trigger buttons of the controller in-game, a Quick Weapon Select feature, improvements to the Level Select function, Aspect Ratio and Brightness options, as well as a new split-screen HUD and much more.  You can find more information on the patch notes here.

The free update is available now the next time you fire up DOOM (1993) and DOOM II for PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and iOS.
