At EA Play Live last night we got our first look at FIFA 21, which launches for PC, PS4 and Xbox One on October 9th.  However, if you pre-order the pricey Ultimate or Champions Edition, you can get it three days earlier on the 6th.  A trial for the game will also be available for EA Access and Origin Access subscribers on October 1st.

FIFA 21 will also be releasing later in the year for PS5 and Xbox Series X, though a release date for the next-gen version has not been announced.  However, EA has revealed that as long as you purchase FIFA 21 before FIFA 22 releases next year, you will get a next-gen upgrade for free.

Additionally, all your progress that you may have made playing FIFA 21 Ultimate Team, including players, coins, points, records and online progress, will all carry over into the next-gen upgrade.  However, progress from other modes such as Career, Pro Clubs, Co-Op Seasons and Online Seasons will not carry over, which is a shame.

While we never got to see any in-game action, with the next-gen versions, EA has promised that we can expect “blazing fast load times, deferred lighting and rendering, enhanced animation technology, off-ball humanisation, and more“.

EA did also reveal that FIFA 21 on PC, will be the same as the PS4 and Xbox One versions, so we cant really expect all that much of a visual or performance upgrade, however, FIFA 21 will release on Steam, as well as on Origin for PC.

A Nintendo Switch version is also on the way with the Legacy Edition, but once again this will be the same core Switch game as previous versions, only with updated squads, kits, presentation, menu’s and broadcasting.  So unless you’re desperate to play FIFA 21 on the Switch, I’d give it a miss.  There will also be a Google Stadia release, but details will be revealed a little later into the year.

Finally, if you were hoping that FIFA 21 would be getting the Apex Legends cross-platform treatment so that PC, PlayStation and Xbox players can all play against each other, it looks like that feature won’t be happening anytime soon in the series.  Here’s what EA had to on cross-platform coming to FIFA “Allowing our players to play against each other on whichever platform they play EA Sports FIFA is a long-term goal of ours. At this moment we don’t have any news, but we’re continuing to investigate its integration and will share any updates when we have them.
