After that not-so-impressive first gameplay reveal last year, we’ve finally got to see new footage of the Halo Infinite campaign.

Halo Infinite was supposed to be a launch title for the Xbox Series X|S when the consoles launched in November 2020. However, following that disappointing first gameplay reveal, the Master Chief’s latest adventure was delayed. And for good reason, because it didn’t look good. It most certainly didn’t look up to the high standards set by this beloved franchise.

Thankfully, 343 Industries has dropped the first gameplay footage since last year and things are looking much more promising. Though to be fair, after last year, it had a low bar to beat. That said, I’m happy with what I have seen.

The six-minute “Overview” trailer looks at how players can freely explore the large map, going about missions as the Master Chief as they please. We see plenty of crashing ships, explosions, one-liners, grappling hooks and even a redesigned Cortana (kind of).

The new AI companion looks like Cortana and sounds like Cortana, but it’s not Cortana. Instead, the AI is known as “The Weapon” is tasked with finding out what happened to the OG Cortana following the events of Halo 5: Guardians. So, in that respect, we already know how Halo Infinite will link to other games in the series in one way or another.

Furthermore, the official description for Halo Infinite tells the tale of:

The Banished have defeated UNSC forces and taken control of the mysterious Zeta Halo, threatening the survival of humankind. When all hope is lost and humanity’s fate hangs in the balance, the Master Chief returns to confront the most ruthless foe he’s ever faced.

Here’s a fresh look at the Halo Infinite campaign that introduces players to true Spartan freedom in the biggest, most wide-open and adventure-filled Halo experience yet, launching on December 8, 2021.

Now, as much as I loved Halo and I want to get excited, I keep myself somewhat grounded. I know the gameplay looks good, but until we get to play the campaign, we won’t truly get a taste of how good, it might be. I just hope that with all the new tricks up its sleeve, Halo Infinite doesn’t lose its way. We shall wait and see.
