Following the tease this week for Star Wars: Squadrons, at EA Play last night, we got to see its first gameplay footage.  The trailer was a mixture of the cut-scenes that we saw earlier in the week, only this time with the gameplay thrown into the mix for good measure.

Star Wars: Squadrons is a game that will see you play as Squadron pilot’s, switching between two perspectives of the New Republic Vanguard and the Galactic Empire.  While its main focus will be on the multiplayer aspect, it will also have a campaign and we got to see a bit of both in the trailer below.

As expected, it looks like at least the vast majority of the gameplay will take place from the pilot cockpit, which will display your ships speed throttle, sensor/radar, laser charge, power management, combat display, ship status indicator and components.  Sure you can have dog fights in Star Wars: Battlefront 2, but in Squadrons, the emphasis on this gameplay has been seemingly cranked up to enhance the experience.

In total there will be eight playable ships, each representing their own class.  You have the Fighter class, which offers ships with a good balance of featuring the legendary X-Wing and Tie Fighter.  Interceptor class, featuring ships based upon speed with the Interceptor and A-Wing.  The Support class which features the Tie-Reaper and U-Wing, which can help to protect and keep allies stocked-up on ammo.  Finally, we have the heavy hitting Bomber class featuring the Tie Bomber and Y-Wing.

We also got a look at the customisable features which includes your pilot, the colour of your ship, new components to suit your play-style and even accessories in the cockpit, including an Ewok bobblehead.  Then we got a glimpse of the two multiplayer modes, the standard 5vs5 Dog Fights and the main multiplayer offering called Fleet Battles, which is a multi-stage battle that looks to take inspiration from Battlefield’s Grand Operations mode.

It was also emphasised that the game is fully playable using compatible VR headsets, including PSVR and that the game is cross-platform.  All in all, while I don’t fully trust EA with the “gameplay” as they are known to use pre-rendered/in-game engine footage, the game does look fun.  But what are your thoughts?  Let us know across our social media channels.

Star Wars: Squadrons will release for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on October 2nd.
