Capcom has revealed that the upcoming Resident Evil Village DLC will conclude the Winters saga which began with 2017s RE7.

Following the conclusion of Resident Evil Village, Capcom led us to believe that the next game in the series will conclude the Winters family story. However, it now seems that the upcoming Shadows of Rose DLC will have that honour.

When talking to IGN, Resident Evil Village director Kento Kinoshita stated that Capcom is “creating the Shadows of Rose story to conclude the Winters family saga.

So, what does this mean for the next mainline entry in the series? If recent rumours are to be believed, Resident Evil 9 could focus on Scottish folklore and mythical creatures. To be fair, it wouldn’t be that far removed from RE Village.

However, it could offer Capcom a number of opportunities. For starters, it could kickstart a new saga introducing a new cast of characters. Furthermore, it could reintroduce fan favourite characters such as Jill Valentine or Claire Redfield.

Sure, if fan favourite characters were introduced, Capcom would either have to make them relatively old, perhaps with an oddball explanation as to why they look younger than they should. They could even take inspiration from the recent remakes and reboot the series from the original.

At this time, we can only speculate what the future holds for the Resident Evil series, but it will be exciting to keep that speculative wheeling spinning until Capcom announces something new.

For the immediate future, The Winters Expansion comes bundled with the Shadows of Rose DLC, a new third-person perspective for the main campaign as well as new missions and playable characters for The Mercenaries.

The expansion and RE Village: Gold Edition (which includes the expansion) arrives on October 28th.
