Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is definitely a live-service game and requires an online connection, even for single player.

During the most recent State of Play digital showcase, we finally got to see the new Suicide Squad game in action. It was certainly high-octane, showcasing each of the four playable characters’ skill sets. The playable characters are Harley Quin, Deadshot, King Shark and Captain Boomerang.

However, as much of a fun game as it might be, it looked less like Batman Arkham and more like Destiny, and I’m not sure how I feel about that.

In a developer diary video, Rocksteady Studios confirmed that Suicide Squad will be a live-service game and will feature battle passes. The battle passes will strictly be for cosmetic items, and will not be pay-to-win.

Rocksteady promised long-term support for the game which will also include free content updates and new playable characters. What’s more, while Suicide Squad will be playable for up to four players, it will be playable in single player. However, there is a catch.

In an FAQ for the game, it was revealed that Suicide Squad requires a constant internet connection to play, even if you’re playing solo with bots controlling the three remaining characters.

While the internet connection requirement might not seem to be an issue, if you bought this game and the servers are done, it would literally be unplayable. Furthermore, if Rocksteady decides to kill this game in the future (and that’s very likely), even if you own the disc, the game will be unplayable due to the online requirement.

Bethesda’s Redfall also has the same requirement, even if you’re playing solo. I certainly hope that Rocksteady as well as Arkane reconsiders this requirement because it does no favours for video game preservation.

However, Suicide Squad features online cross-play for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Moreover, you won’t need a PS Plus or Xbox Live subscription to play single player but will need it for online and co-op.

The Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League release date is 26th May 2023.
