SEGA has explained why the Yakuza name is being dropped in favour of Like a Dragon going forward.

Fans of the Yakuza series would have been overjoyed with all the series announcements during the week of the Tokyo Game Show. However, fans would have noticed that SEGA is no longer referring to the series as “Yakuza”.

SEGA told Kotaku that the Like a Dragon branding is “more closely aligned with the Japanese name”, and is why the series will no longer be called Yakuza.

Last week SEGA and developers Ryu ga Gotoku announced Like a Dragon: Ishin (the long-awaited remake of 2014s Yakuza: Like a Dragon) as well as Like a Dragon 8 and Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name.

What are your thoughts on SEGA dropping the Yakuza name? Personally, it’s going to take some getting used to.
