Let me tell you something, if you’re a videogame music lover, there is no way in hell that you should miss the upcoming soundtrack to Double Fine’s Massive Chalice. In order to get a feel for the soundtrack ahead of its iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, Google Play and Xbox Music release on the 2nd of February, you can go ahead to the official Soundcloud page to stream the soundtrack, which sounds absolutely lush with exciting and colourful melodies.

So far from what I have heard, the duo has decided to go with powerful and grim sounding instruments to give the soundtrack a unique texture and rhythm. What is more impressive is how they’ve unconventionally combined different palettes of sound from electronic to acoustic and made it work so well that they complement each other, providing you with a very enjoyable listen.

However, not all tracks are dark though, as there are some really mystic sounding tracks that rely less on electronic and ambiance, but focus more on organic acoustic melodies. Lastly, the drum work is outstanding in this, so I would suggest that you listen to the soundtrack and add it to your collection.

Both Brian Trifon and Brian Lee White were approached by the development team, to create an original sound for their game that would transcend a traditional orchestral palette for a more unconventional and experimental soundtrack specific to the individual artistic vision for Massive Chalice.

The game doesn’t rely on standard fantasy tropes like elves, dwarves, or dragons and I knew that I wanted a unique soundtrack that would match the originality of the game,” explains Brad Muir, Project Lead for Massive Chalice. “We relied on the music to carry a lot of the emotional weight of the game, and Finishing Move really understood what we were going for. The score quickly became the core of the game’s emotional content for us as we developed the game.

More about the composers:

Brian Trifon began his music career working at Fox’s world famous Newman Scoring Stage before moving on to work full time as guitarist and programmer for Grammy nominated electronic artist BT. Brian toured nationally with BT and contributed additional music, programming and guitars to several films, TV shows, and to BT’s album This Binary Universe. In 2008 Brian formed the electronic music group Trifonic. Trifonic’s music has been featured on mix albums alongside tracks by Massive Attack, Trentemøller, Hybrid and Sasha, and has been licensed for advertisements and television shows such as CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and BBC’s Top Gear.

Brian Lee White’s music and productions have been featured in national ad campaigns, internationally acclaimed live acts, Hollywood trailers, and network television, including CBS’ CSI and ABC’s Scrubs. When he is not producing music with Finishing Move, Brian records and performs under his artist alias Gasmilk, whose debut EP Beautiful Things was released in 2014.
