Ubisoft hasn’t forgotten about Splinter Cell, but it still might be a long wait

While I believe that it’s fair to say that the Ubisoft E3 press conference went down as a success with a number of key announcements and gameplay reveals, however, one of the star franchises that was AWOL from the show was none other than Splinter Cell.

It’s been a good four years since Sam Fisher’s last outing with Splinter Cell: Blacklist, so it’s surely due an announcement sometime soon?  Well, sadly that’s not the case and it seems we won’t be getting any kind of announcement in the immediate future.  However, from a segment on the forum Reddit, fans were able to quiz Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot and it seems that the series is gone for now, but certainly not forgotten.

When a fan asked Yves Guillemot about the whereabouts of one of Ubisoft’s most popular franchises, he responded by saying Splinter Cell is a brand we talk about a lot. It’s also personally one of my favourite series. We don’t have anything specific to share at the moment but teams are working on different things, so stay tuned for more.

Then the subject was brought back up during an interview on the Ubisoft Blog and Guillemot said (with a smile) We are receiving lots of sketches and proposals around the brand, and we’re going to pick one up,” he added. “I think you will be able to see something, but you will have to wait for that.

If a new Splinter Cell game was to happen (and I’m sure it will), I’d appreciate the series having a proper reboot.  I know games get that treatment a lot nowadays, but I believe this is a series that will benefit heavily from it, rather than carrying on from Blacklist.  For me personally, I’d love nothing more than to play as a young Sam Fisher, starting out life with the Third Echelon and voiced by none other than Michael Ironside.

Here’s hoping that Ubisoft make the announcement by E3 next year.
