Yakuza: Like a Dragon Releasing 4 Months Later on PS5 and Save Data Will Not Carry

SEGA and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio has announced that Yakuza: Like a Dragon will release a few days early than expected.  Previously set for a November 13th release, the 7th main entry in the Yakuza series will now release on November 10th.

This release date however, is for PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PS4.  Unfortunately, the PS5 version will not release until four months later on March 2nd, 2021.  I’ve already expressed my distain of the attitude towards the PlayStation releases for Yakuza: Like a Dragon, with this brand being the home for the series since the original Yakuza in 2006 on PS2.  In-fact, it’s quite well known that Microsoft originally rejected this series, with Sony remaining loyal.  So I can only assume that Microsoft has been wafting the luscious green currency under the noses of those in-charge of this beloved series.

In truth, despite my distain, I am more than happy to play Yakuza: Like a Dragon on PS4, especially as I won’t be able to get a PS5 until early next year anyway.  I just feel bad for loyal fans of the series that had hoped to play the next-gen version at the same time as when it releases on Xbox Series X/S.

Sega has also announced that just like the transition from Xbox One to Xbox Series X/S, those that purchase Yakuza: Like a Dragon on PS4, will get a free upgrade to PS5 when that version becomes available, both digitally and in physical form.  However, your save data will not carry over.  But this save data issue is only related to PS4 to PS5, because on the Xbox consoles, your save data will carry over.

So it begs the question, is it really worth playing on PS4 and then starting from scratch again on PS5 or might we just wait for the game to release on PS5 next year?  Because in fairness, Yakuza games are not the kind that you can just fly through in an afternoon, as they demand a lot of investment of your time.  It just all feels like kicks in the teeth for the loyal fans on PlayStation.
