There was a lot of speculation that Sony was going to bet high on its iconic exclusives with a bigger price tag than Xbox. However, both fortunately and surprisingly that assumption was wrong, as Sony not only matched, but in one instance, beat Xbox’s price!

The disc version will be just as expensive as the Xbox Series X, coming at £449.99 in the UK and $499.99 in the US. However, where Sony might have pulled the rug out underneath Microsoft is with the pricing of its Digital Version, which will be a £/$100 cheaper at £359.99/$399.

Now it is easy to say that it’s not the case at all, as after all Series S will be selling at an enticing price of £249/$299, and you might have been right if it was not a less powerful next-gen console. By just paying 100 more you will be getting the next-gen experience without compromise, and I am sure the same thought will brush by those buying it for the holidays. Why not just get the best experience available on the market for a 100 more?

Still, here comes a bit of unsurprising news, whilst the digital console at least won’t be too far off what the PS4 cost at launch, the games are certainly not getting cheaper, as they are already being advertised for £70. Honestly, I am surprised it took this long. Believe it or not, games have gotten cheaper to buy value-wise from the N64 days, where cartridges could easily cost £60, and if we account for inflation, that’s at least a £100 today, but despite this, the videogames industry still makes more money than ever and any other within the entertainment industry, so they’ve not been affected by any lack of inflation. However, the games are actually still cheaper whilst the development cost is getting bigger and this something that is lending to the emergence of microtransactions we see creeping in.

The release date was confirmed as well, of course, releasing earlier in certain territories than others.  As you can see in the image above, UK will be getting the PlayStation 5 on the 19th of November, whilst US, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea getting it around a week sooner on the 12th.

Game has Pre-orders already up in the UK and so does Smyths Toys, which might be welcome news for some, as there is a  good chance the demand will outweigh the supply, especially as more people are gaming as a result of the pandemic we are in. So, be sure to get your pre-order in if you want one on launch.

Game is the one that has a variety of bundle deals already up for pre-order, with the console coming both on its own, and with a bundle of accessories. If you are the one to want the full set, it will cost you an eye-watering £700 for the console with a blu-ray reader, 2 controllers, a camera, 3D headsets, and a media remote. At the time of this article, Smyths was already out of stock.

One thing to note though, this generation is anything but straightforward like the last ones, as on one hand we have such stellar exclusives on the PlayStation 5, then on the other, we have an amazing value from Xbox Series X due to its All-Access program and Game Pass offerings that can stack up to a lot of money saved with games included.

However, if you have not owned a PS4 before, and have missed out on the amazing exclusives it had to offer this gen, then Sony is sweetening the pot by letting you play all the big PS4 exclusives on your PS5 at launch with a PS Plus Subscription. With it, Sony is basically saying that there is no better time to jump in if you have been missing out. Which, to be fair is a fantastic incentive.

Still, as a parting word, all we can say is that especially at this time, you really weigh up all your options and see not only how much you play, but also what you play, as both consoles are offering great features in their own right, each giving a different benefit.
