Horizon Forbidden West Will Now Offer Free PS4 To PS5 Upgrade

Sony has made a dramatic U-turn on its decision to offer a free upgrade (regardless of the addition) from PS4 to PS5 for Horizon Forbidden West.

When pre-orders went live last week for Horizon Forbidden West, Sony revealed that the only way to get a PS4 to PS5 upgrade included with your purchase was only by buying the Digital Deluxe, Collector’s Edition or Regalla Edition.

If you bought the standard edition or special edition for PS4, there would be no free upgrade to PS5. There wasn’t even an upgrade path at a small cost. This as you could imagine, did not go down with gamers and for good reason.

Back in September 2020, Sony promised a free PS4 to PS5 upgrade for Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Sackboy: A Big Adventure. The promise on those two games was kept. However, that was not the case for Horizon Forbidden West, as Sony also promised the free upgrade for the Horizon Zero Dawn sequel.

“Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Sackboy A Big Adventure, and Horizon Forbidden West will also launch on PS4. While these three games were designed to take advantage of PS5 and its unique next-gen features like the ultra-high-speed SSD and DualSense controller, PS4 owners will also be able to enjoy these experiences when they launch.”

Not that I will commend Sony for keeping a promise, but they have now made the U-turn and every PS4 purchase will get a free PS5 upgrade. Furthermore, future first-party titles such as the next God of War and Gran Turismo 7 will have a £10 upgrade path.

In an updated PlayStation Blog post, Sony’s Jim Ryan said: “Thursday was to be a celebration of Horizon Forbidden West and the amazing team at Guerrilla working to deliver it on February 18, 2022. However, it’s abundantly clear that the offerings we confirmed in our pre-order kickoff missed the mark.

“Last year we made a commitment to deliver free upgrades for our cross-gen launch titles, which included Horizon Forbidden West. While the pandemic’s profound impact pushed Forbidden West out of the launch window we initially envisioned, we will stand by our offer: Players who purchase Horizon Forbidden West on PlayStation 4 will be able to upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version for free.”

So there you go, Horizon Forbidden West will offer a free PS4 to PS5 upgrade for all. Rejoice.
