It has been revealed that Sony will not be bringing PlayStation to Gamescom this year.

The news was revealed when a statement was issued to the German outlet, Games Wirtschaft, and it was detailed that SIE will not be in attendance.

This will no doubt be a major blow for Gamescom with the likes of Nintendo, Activision Blizzard and Take-Two Interactive dropping out. Though to be fair, with the successes of State of Play and Nintendo Direct, you can understand why Sony and Nintendo would prefer to keep events in-house.

Furthermore, according to an article from VGC, it is believed the reason why big publishers are dropping out is due to their reluctance to plan large-scale demo presentations following the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Gamescom will begin on August 23rd with Opening Night Live, with the main event taking place between August 24th to 28th.
