Wave 3 of Lego Dimensions is upon us and the main theme in this latest batch of Lego goodness is fun, but isn’t that really what the principle of Lego is all about?  In stores now, you can pick up the Ninjago Sensei Wu Fun Pack, the Dr Who Cyberman Fun Pack and the Back to the Future Doc Brown Fun Pack.  However, that is not all because we are also treated to DC Comics The Joker & Harley Quinn Team Pack and without a doubt the star of wave 3 is the Ghostbusters Level Pack.  The Ghostbusters Level Pack brings the first two beloved movies to your gaming consoles, complete with dialogue ripped straight from the movies with the iconic cast of Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis (God rest his soul), Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver and more.

Playing through the iconic scenes from Ghostbusters in Lego form is something that fans have been craving for quite some time now and from the get-go when Janine yells “We got one!” it will instantly bring a smile to your face and that’s even before a piece of the instantly recognisable soundtrack kicks-in.  Once you build up the bite-sized Ecto-1 and head to the Ghostbuster gang’s first paid gig at the Sedgwick Hotel to catch the slimy ghoul, the game is an absolute blast from here on out, right up to its conclusion at the Manhattan Museum of Art that features in Ghostbusters 2.  The slight snag that I have with the Ghostbusters Level Pack is that you can only play as Peter Venkman to begin with and not the three other remaining members of the team.  You can however choose to play as one Ghostbuster at a time, once you’ve played through the first movie.  Perhaps much like Slimer and Stay Puft Fun Packs, Egon, Ray and Winston will be available via future packs?

While the Ghostbusters Level Pack is a lot of fun to playthrough, it does skip many scenes from the movies, almost jumping from beginning, middle and end (at best).  There is also a chunky section going from one mission to the next, it acts like filler between missions in an attempt to stretch out the content as much as possible, otherwise the campaign would have been much shorter.  It’s a shame because iconic moments such as the library ghost have not made the cut, which would have been fantastic to play out.

The contents within the Lego Ghostbusters Fun Pack are easy to assemble with Peter Venkman and his Proton Pack being instructed via the manual, and the Ecto-1 and Ghost Trap being put together via the on-screen instructions and as always, each one of them comes with three variants, each with their own benefits and powers.

The Ecto-1 can be turned into an Ecto-1 Blaster, as well as an Ecto-1 Water Diver for under water escapades.  The Ghost Trap however can also make for a Ghost Stun ‘n’ Trap Device and an almighty Proton Zapper for added Proton Beam oomph!  I have to say that capturing a ghost with the charged particle beams into the Ghost Trap is every bit as captivating as you might expect, a huge part of that is the oh so satisfying sound effects.

With the other four remaining packs, there will be something for any Lego fan.  The Joker and Harley Quinn Team Pack is a particular favourite of mine, while it sells at roughly the same price as a Level Pack; it comes with some awesome additions.  To start with, who doesn’t want The Joker and Harley Quinn invading the Back to the Future universe or any other universe associated with Lego Dimensions for that matter.  Each comes equipped with their iconic weapons, The Joker with his hand cannon and Harley with her oversized mallet, but both also comes with their own vehicles (both with three variations).  For The Joker we have his Chopper (Helicopter), which can be transformed into either a Mischievous Missile Blaster or The Joker’s Lock ‘n’ Laser Jet.  Harley comes with her signature Quinn-Mobile, which can be transformed into the Quinn Ultra Racer and a destructive Missile Launcher.

The three remaining packs come in the form of the Fun Packs, my favourite of which is the Doc Brown Fun Pack from Back to the Future, which will of course go fantastically with the Back to the Future Level Pack (which I still need to buy).  Accompanying Doc Brown is the Travelling Time Train from the third western movie.  The train is not just restricted to the ground, as it can take inspiration from the flying Delorean in B2TF2 and can be turned into the Flying Time Train and if you want to blast the hell out of the bad guys, then its third form will come in handy with the Missile Blast Time Train.

The next pack in question will also be a perfect fit for the previous Dr Who Level Pack, and it’s the Dr Who Cyberman Pack, which also comes bundled with a sinister Dalek.  While the Cyberman is in his mini-figure form, the Dalek can exterminate its target with two vehicle forms; the Fire ‘n’ Ride Dalek and the Silver Shooter Dalek.

Now while I’m not much of a Ninjago fan myself, my son however loves the series, so he was over the moon to play with the Sensei Wu Fun Pack.  The Fun Pack of course comes with wise Sensei Master Wu, but also with one of the most impressive Lego Dimension mini figures/vehicles I’ve seen yet with the Flying White Dragon.  Not only is the Flying White Dragon a lot of fun to play as it is, it also has two epic vehicle forms as the Golden Fire Dragon and the Ultra Destruction Dragon.  I think whether you’re a fan of Ninjago or not, most Lego fans will appreciate the Sensei Wu Fun Pack.

Overall Wave 3 is a strong wave, which has been a constant standard since the release of Lego  Dimensions.  Undoubtedly the star of the show is the Ghostbusters Level Pack, which if I didn’t own Lego Dimensions already, given that this is a Lego theme that fans have longed for, it’s worth buying the Lego Dimensions Starter Pack for this reason alone.  Along with the Ghostbusters Level Pack, Wave 3’s contents should have more than enough to keep you busy and happy until Wave 4 comes along and beyond, which won’t release until March 31st.  While next month won’t see any Team Packs, it is packed with more Ghostbuster goodness, because we will have the Stay Puft and Slimer Fun Packs to look forward too.  Along with them, are the Midway Retro Gamer Level Pack, and the Superman and Aquaman Fun Packs.  Until then keep “Breaking the Rules”.
