A report has emerged regarding the pricing of the Wii U for North America later this year. Forget the Box are citing “sources closely involved with manufacturing and distributing Nintendo products”. They have stated that the Wii U’s costs of manafacture are $180 with an additional $50 for the controller.

Their Source also quoted;

“Cutting production costs to maximize profits is Nintendo’s main concern with the Wii U. They are cutting costs in the Wii U’s hardware to build back confidence in investors. Nintendo wants investors to view Wii U as a less risky proposition.”

“Nintendo chose an economical GPU and CPU that could keep up with the performance of today’s current consoles, but keep hardware costs down to maximize profits. Nintendo got a bargain price on the custom GPU and CPU that the Wii U uses. There is a bigger focus on downloadable content, applications, video content, digital distribution, and services to create a stream of revenue. Investors will be ecstatic with the news.”

With this announcement, it raises questions as to what the price may be in the UK and Europe. Considering that the Wii launched at $250 in America as well as the 3DS, it seems that the Wii U launch price seems reasonable enough. However is this the right move for Nintendo with the latest hiccup that the 3DS launch gave them?

Nintendo have stated that they plan to reveal more at this year’s E3.
