The Worms series from Team 17 is one of the most beloved retro franchises of all-time, and despite the core formula not changing all that much since it first released way back in 1995, it still remains as fun to play today as it ever has.

This timeless classic has seen many releases across many formats and generations, and even though many have appreciated that it’s constantly remained loyal to its roots, some could criticise it for not evolving.  However, with this latest announcement, Team 17 cannot be accused of not trying something a little different with the series.

Worms Rumble retains its updated visual design from more recent releases, such as 2014’s Worms Battlegrounds, as well as retaining the slapstick humour and side-on perspective, but instead of being turn-based, this will be a shooter for up-to 32 players in one match.  In Worms Rumble, it will include modes such as Team Deathmatch, Deathmatch Skirmish and battle royale inspired, Last Worm Standing and Last Squad Standing.  But really, the classic Worms has always had a battle royale formula.

Team 17 have also revealed that Worms Rumble will feature daily challenges and seasonal events which can earn players XP bonuses and in-game currency which can be used to level-up your Worms, as well as unlocking outfits, weapon skins and even emotes.

I know Worms Rumble might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but for me personally, I quite like the look of it.  While we don’t have a set release date as of yet, Worms Rumble will release for PC, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 with cross-play support later this year.  PC players will also be able to sign-up for the beta via Steam, which begins on July 15th.
