1991 Arcade Classic WWF Wrestlefest is Getting a Sequel 19 Years Later!

Back in the early 90’s, when you could find a videogame arcade in almost any town or city in the UK, one of my all-time favourite games was WWF Wrestlefest.  It was a game that could be played with up-to four players and had two modes, the Royal Rumble mode and the Saturday Night’s Main Event mode, where players would pick a tag team from ten playable characters, which takes you through a series of matches and if made it to the end, you would face-off against The Legion of Doom aka The Road Warriors.

It’s still a game that I look fondly upon to this very day, so imagine my joy when I learned that this beloved arcade classic is getting a spiritual successor 19 years later!  Well I say “spiritual successor”, but it is being billed as an “official sequel” by the small independent team, Retrosoft Studios.

The sequel, RetroMania Wrestling not only looks like a visually polished version of the 1991 original with over 700 frames of 2D pixel art and animated backgrounds, but it will also features improved gameplay, more playable wrestlers with distinct styles, it is playable for 2-8 players (which will be playable online post-launch), has various match-types such as one-on-one, tag team, steel cage matches, battle royals and more with over 50 match variations.

However, that is not all, because it will have two main modes with the Story Mode and the 10 Pounds of Gold Mode, paying homage to the National Wrestling Alliance.  Each of the 16 playable wrestlers will have their own ring entrances, entrance music and multiple attires.  It will also have various arena’s including the NWA Power studio, the Pro Wrestling Tee’s Warehouse, and one that even resembles the toy wrestling rings from the late 80’s/early 90’s.

The 16-man launch roster includes Hawk & Animal (Legion of Doom), Johnny Retro (John Morrison from WWE), Colt Cabana, Nick Aldis, Tommy Dreamer, Matt Cordona (Zack Ryder), Brian Myers (Curt Hawkins), The Blue Meanie, Big Stevie Cool (Stevie Richards), Hollywood Nova, Nikita Koloff, Jeff Cobb, Zack Sabre Jr, Warhorse and Austin Idol, with more characters arriving via DLC post-launch.

RetroMania Wrestling has no set release date as of yet, but it is scheduled to release Fall of this year for PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.  You can find further information on RetroMania Wrestling via the official website.
