Super Mario 64, Sunshine and Galaxy are Coming to Switch…For a Limited Time?

Confirming another set of rumours, at the recent Nintendo Direct, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy have all been announced for the Nintendo Switch as part of the collection dubbed Super Mario 3D All-Stars.  However, you can only buy them for a limited period before they disappear…for some reason.

All three of these games are considered to be all-time classics with Super Mario 64 releasing for the N64 back in 1996, Super Mario Sunshine for the GameCube from 2002 and Super Mario Galaxy for the Wii from 2007.  From what I can tell, the three games won’t be remakes or even remasters with much effort, but instead appear to be quite basic ports with the higher resolution and framerates that would naturally come with a modern console.  There will also be a music player mode, which is at least new.

Additionally in what appears to be a quite baffling decision, even by Nintendo’s standards, you can only purchase this collection within a certain timeframe, before it is deleted from all existence, at least digitally.  Super Mario 3D All-Stars will release on September 18th, but will be removed from the digital Nintendo eShop by the end of March 2021.  You will also be able to purchase this collection in its physical form, so copies will be available while there is still stock.

It’s an odd sales approach in my opinion, because while it will provoke panic buying and no doubt eBay scalpers, these are three beloved games and they’ll always sell, while they’re available, which surely generates more money for Nintendo in the long-run?

It’s also worth noting that while playing the Co-Star mode in Super Mario Galaxy, you will need to use separate Joy-Cons, so it’s worth keeping this in mind for Nintendo Switch Lite owners.  Do you plan on picking up Super Mario 3D All-Stars for the Nintendo Switch?  Let us know across our social media channels.
