Thanks to an interview with Japanese videogame magazine Famitsu, new details have been revealed for Chris Redfield’s role in the forthcoming Resident Evil Village, the 8th main entry in the series.  Just a heads-up before I proceed, I will speak of spoilers regarding the ending of Resident Evil 7, though if you’ve not finished that game yet, you perhaps shouldn’t be reading details for its sequel.

During the conclusion of Resident Evil 7, Chris Redfield swoops in with his new “Blue Umbrella” comrades to save RE7 protagonist, Ethan Winters.  However, in the reveal trailers for Resident Evil Village, Chris Redfield doesn’t come across as the series hero that we know him for.  In-fact, he comes across as quite the opposite.

So, in a series of tweets kindly translated by Alex Aniel, we’ve learned more about Redfield’s role and it doesn’t paint a very heroic picture, though in this series, nothing is ever what it seems.

In the tweets, it’s revealed that Chris Redfield basically kidnaps Ethan Winters and dumps him in the village of RE8 with Ethan not knowing how long he’s been unconscious for.  When Ethan awakes, the “mysterious mountain village” is in some kind of “decline.”

In the Famitsu article, it also shows images of the “villagers holding hands in a circle and praying. It appears that the dangerous creatures are protecting them. They appear to be part of a peculiar religion/cult.

We’ve also known for a while that Resident Evil Village will feature a merchant, similar to the fan-favourite “What are ya buying?” merchant from RE4.  In the article it also highlights that the new merchant in a trench coat “talks as if he wants to sell something”.  However, the article also mentions that “Old Shaman Lady” that we also saw in a recent video, will play a different role to the merchant in a trench coat”.

For me personally, the fact that both the Shaman Lady and the merchant in the trench coat are talked about in the same breath, might indicate that we may have two merchants in Resident Evil Village, but that’s just speculation on my part.

There are more snippets of information, which you can check out on Alex Aniel Twitter thread.  Resident Evil Village is set to release for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in 2021.
