Guerrilla Games and Sony have officially “retired” the official Killzone franchise website.

The news was announced on the Killzone website informing visitors that going forward when visiting Killzone.com, you will instead be redirected to PlayStation.com.

Upon visiting Killzone.com, developers of the main series Guerrilla Games published the following statement:

KILLZONE.COM HAS RETIRED

Dear Killzone.com visitor,

The official website for the KILLZONE franchise has retired. Going forward, visitors to Killzone.com will be directed to PlayStation.com.

While this change doesn’t affect the online multiplayer modes, player statistics or ranking data for KILLZONE MERCENARY and KILLZONE SHADOW FALL, it is now no longer possible to create or manage clans in KILLZONE SHADOW FALL. We apologize for this inconvenience.

Thank you to Killzone.com’s many fans and visitors throughout the years for their enthusiasm and support.

Sincerely,

Guerrilla

So in a nutshell while the multiplayer for Killzone: Shadow Fall remains active, along with ranking and statistics data, it will no longer be possible to create or manage clans in Shadow Fall.

PS Vita title Killzone: Mercenary will also be impacted in the same way as Shadow Fall.

When the first Killzone released for the PS2 in 2004 it was dubbed the “Halo Killer” though in my opinion it came nowhere near the standards set by Halo, let alone kill the series.

As the series progressed with new instalments, so too did the quality of each release.

Killzone 2 (2009) and Killzone 3 (2011) were among my favourite games of the PS3 era, despite ‘that’ final boss battle of Killzone 2 which nearly resulted in me smashing my controller to bits.

However the last time we saw a main entry in the Killzone series was with Killzone: Shadow Fall on the PS4 in 2013.

When I reviewed Shadow Fall I was certainly blown away by the visuals at the time and the story had me gripped.

But in hindsight it perhaps never really felt much like a Killzone game and unfortunately that would be the last we’d see of this beloved series.

Nowadays Guerrilla Games are focused on the Horizon series and word has it that this will be a trilogy series.

So it’s unlikely that we’ll see a new Killzone anytime soon, unless it’s developed by a different studio.  At which stage at least 10 years would have likely passed.

The closure of the website doesn’t surprise me, though it would perhaps surprise if someone told me that the multiplayer of Shadow Fall was thriving.

That said, it does make me a little sad that this series is temporarily being killed-off as I’d love nothing more than to see a new Killzone announced this year.

However it would be great to see the original trilogy remastered for the PS4 and PS5, though that’s unlikely to happen.

But at least we have Horizon Forbidden West to look forward to this year, which releases for both PS4 and PS5.
