The newly reformed Lucasfilm Games is already getting to work as they have announced that a new Star Wars game is on the way and it’s to be developed by Ubisoft.

We are excited to announce we are working with Lucasfilm Games to develop a brand-new, story-driven, open world Star Wars adventure!” said Ubisoft in a tweet.

While the Star Wars game from Ubisoft has only just been announced it’s likely that development hasn’t quite started yet.  However we do know that this Star Wars game will be developed by The Division studio, Ubisoft Massive.

Julian Gerighty will be the creative director on the Star Wars game.  Gerighty had previously worked as director for both The Division 2 and The Crew.  The Star Wars game from Ubisoft will be powered by the Snowdrop engine.

In terms of what this means for Electronic Arts who hold a 10-year exclusivity deal with the Star Wars license, obviously something has changed because the license is of course no longer exclusive to EA.

However, EA will still develop games within the Star Wars license, as they will most likely at least continue the Battlefront, Squadron and Jedi: Fallen Order series.

When speaking to Wired.com on the topic of what this means for EA, Lucasfilm Games said: “EA has been and will continue to be a very strategic and important partner for us now and going forward. But we did feel like there’s room for others.

In my personal opinion if this Star Wars game is inspired by the likes of The Division, it will either be great or it will suck.  I have a feeling that there won’t be much in-between.  However I am excited that we’ll potentially get a fresh approach with this beloved franchise.
