Nintendo has announced the Nintendo Switch (OLED model) and it will launch on October 8th, the same launch day as Metroid Dread.

While this isn’t the Switch Pro with 4K visuals many were hoping for, I suppose it’s at least an upgrade for those that wanted a newer model. Though the upgrades perhaps aren’t as significant as some might have hoped.

Firstly, let’s detail some of the improvements that come with this newer Switch model.

The screen is slightly bigger at 7-inch, compared to the 6.2-inch original. Obviously, the OLED will make for more vibrant colours when playing handheld mode. I would assume that the OLED screen will make little to no difference when playing docked on the TV.

At the back of the Switch tablet, it will have a wider adjustable stand, which replaces the narrow flimsy stand in the original models. It will come with a new dock that features a LAN port, so you are no longer restricted to using the Wi-Fi.

The internal storage has been upgraded from 32GB to 64GB, which is quite handy. The OLED Switch will also have onboard speakers for better audio for handheld and tabletop play. Just like the original Switch, the OLED version will be playable handheld and docked, as well as having detachable Joy-Cons.

Now let’s get on to the not-so-great. In truth, there’s not anything bad to say about the OLED Switch, but in terms of performance, there is no improvement over the original models when it comes to gameplay.

The battery life will be the same as the second model of the Nintendo Switch. In terms of performance and loading times, much will remain the same. There are also no improvements to the Joy-Cons, as they are exactly the same. So, there is nothing negative to say, it’s just the same as before in some respects.

Finally, who much will the Nintendo Switch (OLED model) cost? In the UK it has an RRP of £309.99 and in the US, it has an RRP of $349.99. The console will also be available in White or Neon Red/Blue.
