Confirming previous rumours, EA has officially ditched the FIFA brand and has announced a new name for its long-running football series.

The EA Sports title has carried the FIFA brand for nearly 30 years, so this is going to take some getting used to for fans. That being said, judging by the press release, it seems that not much will change going forward.

EAs football franchise will still carry the FIFA name for the next release. So for at least one more game, the series will be known as FIFA 23. However, as of 2023, the series will be known as EA Sports FC.

Despite dropping the FIFA brand, EA Sports FC will still feature over 300 individually licensed players, as well as 700 teams, 100 stadiums and over 30 leagues. In the press release, EA also makes the point of its “licensing portfolio by retaining and expanding the licensed football content, scaling to new experiences, and increasing access through more platforms.

As for FIFA 23, EA has promised to deliver “more game modes, features, teams, leagues, players, and competitions than any previous edition.” Well, I guess that doesn’t include FIFA on the Switch.

While no release date for FIFA 23 hasn’t been revealed, EA has promised to reveal more details on EA Sports FC during the summer of 2023. Will it go free-to-play? Only time will tell.
