Who would have thought there could be 2 Final Fantasy’s? Oh wait. Doesn’t final mean like the end or last?

Recently I had time to check out this game. A remake of the original, it was released last year for the psp system. I’ve had a bit of free time on my hands and in my infinite quest to find a psp game worth taking on the long flight to Florida I gave this a crack. I was not disappointed.

Story

An enjoyable storyline by all accounts. Not particularly detailed or intricate, but I suppose that’s what makes it work. The story isn’t so heavy that its almost too much, quite the opposite its not flimsy and lifeless in any way yet it keeps you hooked. It follows the band of siblings Firion, Maria, Guy and Leon who’s homeland is attacked by the evil emperor. The emperor then goes on to build The Dreadnought, a massive airship capable of destroying the world. You go about to liberate the world you hold so dead and defeat the evil cow. I don’t want to give a spoiler so I won’t say much more.

I’m giving it an 8/10.

Gameplay

Traditional Final Fantasy gameplay. Love it. Also when moving about the vast world displayed in this game, it feels like playing Pokémon on the gameboy. It is a handheld consoles dream quite frankly. Its smooth, its graceful and yet there’s such a brutalness about it which creates tension to the point where your shouting at your characters when they miss (much like the Pokémon games again). I am in love with the gameplay in this regard as in a word its truly magical.

Without a doubt 10/10.

Graphics

Firstly this game was not created for it’s graphics. It is depicted in retro pixels which is to be expected after being a remake of a classic game. As far as pixel graphics go it really stands in a league of its own. Really good. More to the fact there are few handheld games that actually have better graphics. With the exception of other Final Fantasy titles of course. Overall I like the graphics yet I understand they aren’t the best. Then again we cant knock the overall feel of the game on this because it isn’t built for such purposes. The cut scenes are depicted in crystal clear Final Fantasy beauty so I’m giving it praise.

7/10 in my book.

Soundtrack

Nothing special here to be honest. It’s not like crush 40 came in to write the soundtrack or Leona Lewis let her song be featured for this one. Catchy little jingles is as far as it goes, although they are very well used in the places used. Of course the traditional Final Fantasy jingle is in there.

Nothing to go crazy about so 6/10.

Conclusion

I love this game. I really do. I think it has mastered what the portable gaming scene has been missing since Pokémon gold and silver. It has everything you want in a portable game to be honest. I would recommend to any type of gamer whether you are interested in the Final Fantasy franchise or not.

Good
