SEGA has revealed the Game Gear Micro, a mini version of the beloved mini handheld console that released during the dawn of the 1990’s.  The SEGA Game Gear is a personal favourite system of mine, being able to play versions of Master System and Mega Drive classics on the go.  Even though the legendary Nintendo Game Boy was far more commercially popular, the Game Gear was far superior with its 8-bit visuals and performance.  However, as any Game Gear owner would know, it arbitrated its battery life, which would give you about an hour if you were lucky.

The Game Gear Micro is releasing on October 6th in celebration of its 30th anniversary of when it released in Japan during 1990, sadly, there is no news at this time as to whether this tiny handheld will release in the west.  But if we don’t get a western release, you could always try a number of import specialist retailers, as well as Amazon Japan.

In total, those in Japan will have the choice of four different Game Gear Micro’s to choose from, each coming in a variety of colours with exclusive built-in games.  The Game Gear Micro measures in at 80mm wide, 43mm in height and 20mm depth, which makes it about 40% less than the size of the original system.  It will have a price of 4,980 yen, which is about £35-£40 and its built-in battery is said to give you  around three hours of play-time on a full charge.

With the four Game Gear Micro’s to choose from, you will have a choice of original Black, as well as Blue, Yellow and Red.  Below are images and details on the built-in games that comes with each colour.

SEGA Game Gear Micro Black:

  • Sonic The Hedgehog
  • Puyo Puyo Tsu
  • Out Run
  • Royal Stone

SEGA Game Gear Blue:

  • Sonic & Tails
  • Gunstar Heroes
  • Sylvan Tale
  • Baku Baku Animal

SEGA Game Gear Micro Yellow:

  • Nazo Puyo: Arle no Roux
  • Shining Force
  • Shining Force II
  • Shining Force: Final Conflict

SEGA Game Gear Micro Red:

  • Megami Tensei Gaiden: Last Bible
  • Megami Tensei Gaiden: Last Bible Special
  • The G.G. Shinobi
  • Columns

There will also be bundles which includes all four SEGA Game Gear Micro consoles and with or without a SEGA Big Boy Window accessory, which is based upon the same accessory for the original Game Gear which costs a whopping 29,980 yen, which around £220, the complete bundle.

If the SEGA Game Gear Micro doesn’t release in the west, will you be importing it and what colour will you go for?  Perhaps you’ll buy them all or you believe £40 for a tiny system with only four games is too much to pay, especially when there are plenty of 3rd party handheld consoles with far more SEGA classics in their library?  Let us know across our social media channels.
