Whilst everyone might have been expecting the Xbox Series S, not to be confused with Xbox One S, which is definitely not Xbox One X, predecessor of Xbox Series S, which is… ok we’ll stop, no one was probably expecting the price to be this darn impressive.

Retailing for only £249 in the UK, the Xbox Series S will have the same CPU, the same SSD technology (albeit coming in at less capacity with 512gb, which might be hopefully enough for Warzone), and the same GPU architecture as that of Microsoft’s flagship Series X console. It is being sold as a 1440p/120fps alternative to the 4K 60 FPS target experience for the Xbox Series X.

Honestly, to get fast loading speed, improved system architecture and ray tracing capabilities for such a low price is astonishing to say the least, and when paired with the Xbox Gamepass is an absolute steal! Imagine getting to play 100s of games per month for less than a fraction of the cost it would take you to buy even a few of those games!

However, there is a little caveat here that people should be aware of, especially people who have an impressive last gen Xbox collection of physical games. The new Series S does not come with a Blu-Ray drive, meaning that it is up in the air as to whether you will be able to benefit from backwards compatibility on physical discs.

This also of course means that for the biggest games that are not on Gamepass, you will most likely end up paying much more for the digital edition when compared their physical counterpart, as both Xbox and Playstation digital games can cost more even with a deal than the physical versions.

Still, we live in uncertain times, as both Sony and Microsoft have yet to reveal any pricing info for their flagship consoles, and seem to be waiting for the other to draw first, and honestly it is getting a tad bit irksome at this point. I really hope we get some concrete pricing soon for all consoles!
