Developer cancels Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II restored DLC on the Nintendo Switch.

On 2 June 2023, developers of the Nintendo Switch port, Aspyr Media cancelled the promised restored content DLC. Prior to its launch, Aspr revealed that as well as porting the popular Star Wars RPG sequel to the Switch, it would also be releasing the game’s original cut content as free DLC.

In the original release of KOTOR II on PC and OG Xbox developed by Obsidian Entertainment, the content was cut from the game to meet deadlines. However, some years later, a group of modders were able to restore the content and release it for PC. This content was intended by Aspyr to eventually come to the Switch port.

I get that video game development is never easy and there can be many unforeseen hurdles. No doubt fans who bought this port in the hope of an obligation being fulfilled will be disappointed. Yet, it can also be considered to be insulting that at the time of writing, Aspyr has given no explanation as to why it’s no longer releasing the content as promised.

The closest explanation that was given is that Aspyr will “not be moving forward” with its planned DLC. While some on the Twitter thread are sympathetic, the vast majority are not happy with this news, especially with no explanation being given.

Aspy has promised customers a code from a selection of Nintendo Switch Star Wars ports handled by the developer, as well as a KOTOR II code on PC Steam. I must declare that I am a customer of this Switch port, and I’m not overly happy with this news either.

I’ve not yet decided if I will take up the offer of a code, for a couple of reasons. One is that I’m not sure what code I would like, as I am only really interested in the KOTOR series, which I already own. Secondly, we’ve not heard from the developer since this announcement and I am holding out for a refund. If not, I’ll eventually take a code.

Still, it’s not an ideal situation and while I won’t be sending any aggro their way, I think the least that Aspyr could have done is offer some form of explanation as to why it’s not fulfilling its promise.

Oh, interestingly, the mention of the restored free DLC has now been removed from the Star Wars: KOTOR II launch trailer on Aspyr’s YouTube channel, but the trailer still remains intact on the official Nintendo channel.
