It has been revealed that the upcoming The Last of Us TV show from HBO will follow the original game.  However, it will still “deviate greatly” in parts.

Speaking to IGN, Naughty Dog chief Neil Druckmann said that the show will follow the game to an extent, but there will be some tweaks to offer some surprises.

Things sometimes stay pretty close. It’s funny to see my dialogue there from the games in HBO scripts,” said Druckmann.

And sometimes they deviate greatly to much better effect because we are dealing with a different medium. Some of my favourite episodes so far have deviated greatly from the story, and I can’t wait for people to see them.

Druckmann continued: “For example, in the game, there’s so much action you have to train the player about mechanics. You have to have more violence and more spectacle to some degree than you would need on a TV show because you don’t need to train people on how to use a gun.

So that’s something that’s been really different, and HBO’s been great in pushing us to move away from hardcore action and focus more on the drama of the character.

Personally, I like that the HBO series is going to use the original game as its source material, but will deviate to offer some surprises.  I’d always like my favourite video game to movie/TV adaptations to follow its source material, but not play-by-play.

If everything was exactly the same, we’d know what to expect and there would be no surprises.  So this particular news has me feeling optimistic about the show.

Currently, there is no release date for The Last of Us TV show, but hopefully, it will arrive late this year or early next year.
