eFootball is finally released and it marks the occasion when the series has moved away from the Pro Evolution Soccer aka PES brand for many years.

The rebranding is to dawn a new free-to-play era and it was supposed to be a fresh start for the series. The first form of eFootball is out now and it’s not good.

The game is really bare-bones, like really. You can play exhibition matches and some online matches. Right now, that’s pretty much your lot. There will be the first “free” update this autumn with new modes, player types and more. Right now, this is nothing short of a glorified demo. But hey, you can earn some easy free trophies/achievements.

PES hasn’t really been a fast football game in recent years, but I’ve found its pace to be just right. However, eFootball just feels slow and sluggish. Even when you hold the button down, passes have little weight to them.

The accuracy of the passing is frustrating too and more than ever, you’ll be experiencing wayward passes, and the wrong players receiving the ball. Players also tumble over with even more ease. And this is modern football we’re talking about here.

I’m playing eFootball on the PS5, and nothing about it looks new-gen. The players look last-gen at best and they even have a weird square shaped mouths when they open. Sure, you can play this glorified demo for free, but I wouldn’t recommend it.

I’ve been a PES fan since the beginning, in fact, since the series was known as International Superstar Soccer (ISS) and for the first time, I worry for my beloved football franchise.

eFootball might very well improve in the months to come, but right now, I wouldn’t bother. eFootball is available as a F2P title for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
