Last week news began circulating after an in-game appearance in Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Odyssey from 2018.

Straight-up, in-game ads are part of free-to-play games in some respects, whether consoles or mobile. However, when it comes to games paid for in full for the game, that’s where it gets stretchy in my opinion. A clip of the in-game ad was shared on Reddit.

It may seem strange to have an ad appear in the latest game, Assassin’s Creed Mirage, which was released this year in a game launched five years ago. I suppose in Ubisoft’s defence, it is trying to entice gamers to buy the latest game, assuming it’s not been purchased already.

That being said, apparently, this ad was by accident due to a technical error, apparently. A Ubisoft representative told The Verge: “We have been made aware that some players encountered pop-up ads while playing certain Assassin’s Creed titles yesterday. This was the result of a technical error that we addressed as soon as we learned of the issue.”

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Assassin’s Creed Mirage are out now on PC, PlayStation and Xbox.
