When the Alan Wake inspired expansion AWE releases for Control later this month, it will be accompanied by an update that will also improve the quality of life for the game.  With this free update will come Assist Mode, which will allow the player to make a number of adjustments to the games difficulty, damage dealt and received, weapon and energy reload times, even to the point of the main character Jesse not being able to die.  During a livestream of AWE from developers Remedy Entertainment, they said “Assist mode lets you modify the rules of the game to suit your specific needs. It’s important to us that as many people as possible get to experience Control the way they want.

Some of Jesse’s moves have also been powered-up, such as her Multi-Launch ability, which will allow her to thrown up-to three objects at a single time.  However for me personally, the new feature that I will be looking forward to most of all with this update is the improved checkpoint system.  In my opinion, the current checkpoint system of Control is far from great and when you die during a boss battle, then you have to navigate your way-through the Oldest House (especially if having to battle through enemies time and time again), it can be an enthusiasm killer to say the least.  And if you’ve played Control, you’ll know that navigating the Oldest House can be a challenge in itself.

Remedy will be adding “soft checkpoints”, so if you get one-hit killed from a boss, you won’t have to navigate your way through the maze every time you die.  Better still; some boss fights will also have mid-fight saves.  Which for me, will improvement my enjoyment of the game quite considerably.

In case you missed it, you can watch the first 15-minutes of the AWE expansion below, which is pretty much spoiler free.  Also, if you haven’t finished the first expansion The Foundation, you don’t have to finish that before playing the AWE content.

While this is good news, last week it was confirmed that you will only get a ‘free’ next-gen upgrade of Control if you buy the recently announced Ultimate Edition, which could mean players having to buy the game again, as well as the two expansions.  Which as you can imagine, hasn’t gone down too well with the community.  You can read-up on those details here.
