A release date has been given for the 8-bit arcade stealth shooter Metrocide – becoming available for PC on 15th December.

Metrocide is being likened to an 8-bit SNES Shadowrun, but with the difficulty of the Binding of Isaac, Super Meat Boy and Spelunky – the press release warning that the “game is really for the hard-core PC gamer that doesn’t mind one-hit kills, permadeath and smashing keyboards in fits of rage”.

In Metrocide you play as contract killer T.J. Trench, and must earn cash through a series of increasingly difficult kills in order to escape the city before it’s too late. If dead bodies are found, witnesses are left alive or you are caught on security cameras, the number of cop drones looking for you will increase. Put simply, this means wandering around the areas, picking up contracts describing your victims, killing them and getting away with it.

The game was made available in Early Access on 16th October, and the developers have been receiving feedback and making adjustments accordingly – final adjustable difficulty settings implemented, bonus game modes ‘score attack’, ‘blaster only’ and ‘dead trench walking’ (the latter seeing an APB put out on you, and you trying to complete contracts while the whole city is armed and wants you dead).

The video above is a little walkthrough by the developer, which should give you a better impression of the game than the trailer. It looks interesting, though. As long as there is enough variety with the contracts and killing methods, this could be a gem.
