It’s “Rare” these days to hear any news about Rare working on anything exciting. Well, technically this time around we are hearing news from ex-Rare staff that went off to create their own studio and what appears to be their very first game.
The studio they created is called Playtonic, formed by six Rare veterans and they have been working on a new title currently known as “Project Ukelele” and it will be a “worthy spiritual successor” to Banjo-Kazooie. Funding has been secured for the project, but Playtonic would still like to work with a publisher, says Playtonic.

For those that are on Twitter, you may recall quite a while back that Mingy Jongo teased about a new platformer from the core creators of Banjo Kazooie is in the works. Nothing else has been mentioned since the little teaser, until now.

Over the coming months we’ll reveal more about our project and future growth plans, and we very much intend to get you involved and listen to your views on our game’s direction. You’ll ultimately shape the destination of our project and we plan to continue exchanging sweet glances across cyberspace at you until we get there.

There’s a history of working with Nintendo so we’d naturally love to see our game on a Nintendo platform. If people tell us to make Wii U our target console platform then we’ve got the flexibility to do that.

More details about “Project Ukelele” will be revealed in issue #227 of Edge Magazine. If you want to learn more about the team at Playtonic, then click here.
