FIFA 23 will feature cross-play, but there’s a catch
EA has revealed that FIFA 23 will feature cross-play. However, there will be a catch.
The major catch is that FIFA 23 will only be cross-play for 1v1 modes only, at least for this year’s release. However, there will still be plenty of modes that will take advantage of cross-play. This also means that only FIFAs 11v11 Pro Clubs mode will miss out on cross-play.

As reported by Eurogamer, FIFA 23 will feature cross-play for FIFA Ultimate Team for FUT Online Friendlies, FUT Rivals, FUT Champions as well as FUT Online Draft. Furthermore, other modes playable in cross-play include Online Seasons and Online Friendlies.
However, cross-play will only function for the same generation console against each other. For example, only Xbox One and PS4 players can play against each other. Additionally, PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Google Stadia will only be able to play against each other.
The reason that only same-generation consoles can play against each other is due to unique features that are available on PC and new-gen consoles, but not last-gen.
“The reason is the gameplay is different,” explained EAs Sam Rivera, during a press event attended by Eurogamer. “There are multiple features that are gen five [EA’s classification for the current generation] exclusive, so we cannot just match up between them – it would desync right away.”
Thankfully, EA plans on expanding cross-play with future releases, such as the upcoming rebranded EA Sports FC.
“We’re already exploring expanding our crossplay capabilities in the future, so our players can play and connect with whoever, whenever and wherever they want,” teased EAs Matthew Lafreniere.
FIFA 23 will be the last game in the series to carry the “FIFA” name before being rebranded to EA Sports FC. FIFA 23 will be released for PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Google Stadia on September 30th or September 27th for those that pick up the Ultimate Edition.
