At least in terms of my own experience, the original Flashback that I played on the SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis back in 1993 was one of the first cinematic games that I ever played, and I loved it.

Granted, from what I remember, I sucked at the game, but to be fair, video games back then could be gruelling, long before any walkthrough guides existed and Flashback was no exception.

There was a Flashback remake in 2013 and sadly I remember that game quite well and it certainly did not do the original game the justice it deserved. Nowadays, you can pick it up digitally for a couple of quid, but even then, I’d still avoid it. Thankfully, the sequel developed by Microids Lyon/Paris and Paul Cuisset (the developer of Flashback’s spiritual successor Fade to Black), is on the way with Flashback 2 which was announced in May 2021.

In Flashback 2: “the 22nd century, the United Worlds extends throughout the Solar System, but this tranquillity is threatened by the Morph invasion led by the fearsome General Lazarus. In search of his lifelong friend Ian, Conrad B. Hart dives once again into an action-packed adventure full of twists, turns and revelations with the help of his allies and AI-powered weapon A.I.S.H.A.”

Flashback 2 will be released on 16 November 2023 digitally for PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch. A digital version will also be released on 30 November.
