It’s fair to say that Redfall from Arkane Austin is one of this year’s biggest disappointments, to say the least.

From the same development family that brought us the likes of the critically acclaimed Dishonored 2 and Deathloop, Redfall was a game that deserved so much more and so did loyal fans of the developer.

Upon release, it became very clear that not only did Redfall look and perform below par, but it was also lacking features that prevented this co-op shooter from being the game we were led to believe.

To be honest, even if Arkane Austin will pull a rabbit from the hat and claw it back similar to the likes of other Bethesda titles, Fallout 76 and The Elder Scrolls Online, it would still need a miracle for players to return in the masses. At the time of writing and according to SteamDB, only 15 players are in Redfall right now and only 25 over the last 24 hours on the Steam PC platform.

When speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Bethesda’s head of publishing, Pete Hines insisted that Arkane is still working on improving Redfall and compared the vampiric shooter to the two aforementioned Bethesda-published titles.

“We are the same company that has had launches that didn’t go the way we wanted, and we don’t quit or abandon stuff just because it didn’t start right. The Elder Scrolls Online’s PC launch was not flawless but we stuck with it,” exclaimed Hines. “Now it’s like this insanely popular multiplatform. It’s the same with Fallout 76. Redfall is no different for us.”

Hines also went on to say that the developer is still working on the promised 60fps patch. “Okay, we didn’t get the start we wanted, but it’s still a fun game… and we’re going to keep working on it,” he continued. “We’re going to do 60FPS. We’re going to get it to be a good game because we know, as a first-party studio, Game Pass lives forever. There will be people ten years from now who are going to join Game Pass, and Redfall will be there.”

In my review of Redfall, I said it’s: “a fun game at times, but its lack of cinematic storytelling and uninspired open-world gameplay loop struggles to allow me to feel immersed as much as I would have liked. In a nutshell, Redfall is a solid vampiric shooter that lacks the bite required to make this another Arkane classic.”

Redfall is out now on PC and Xbox Series X|S.
