Resident Evil 4 developers originally didn’t want to remake a “masterpiece” for a game that is considered to be one of the best of all time.

During an interview with Game Informer (thanks The Gamer), RE4 remake co-directors Kazunori Kadoi and Yasuhiro Ampo were speaking about the upcoming remake and how they originally had reservations about the game.

It’s often believed that a true masterpiece in the video game industry should be left alone. However, Capcom is no stranger to amazing remakes with its iconic survival horror series, including RE1 and RE2. Now, RE4 is the next masterpiece to receive the remake treatment.

Honestly speaking, I didn’t want to do it. Among the RE series and even games in general, the original RE4 has become a legend,” said Ampo. “I knew that it would be difficult to successfully remake it, and if we made one mistake with any updates we made, we would anger its fans.

Kadoi also shared the same view as his co-director, adding: “When I first heard about remaking RE4, my first impression was that since the original is a masterpiece, a remake would be difficult. So I didn’t want to do it.
