The awesome Resident Evil 4 remake now has microtransactions in a sneaky move by Capcom.

Resident Evil 4 remake is amazing, in fact, it might even be a better game than its original from 2005. Much like the Dead Space remake, it takes what made the OG so successful and modernises it without losing that spark that first brought it to the dance.

Furthermore, while being short of a few characters at the time of writing, The Mercenaries mode was introduced as free DLC on 7 April. Seriously, all this mode needs to do is add multiplayer co-op, characters and maps, and it might be the best version of Mercs yet!

However, with the arrival of The Mercenaries mode is the implementation of microtransactions. Earlier in this article, I said this was a sneaky move by Capcom and the reason being, that this implementation was made after all the reviews have gone out, so they weren’t mentioned. Which sadly, is a common practice in the modern era.

That being said, while I won’t often defend microtransactions, they do not impact the game. I know, before you roll your eyes, hear me out. The microtransactions grant players “access to a weapon’s exclusive upgrade at any time”.

There are various Upgrade Tickets ranging from £2.49 to £7.99 and are essentially time savers for upgrading weapons. From what I can tell, since the introduction of the microtransactions, RE4 doesn’t appear to be more grindy. So you can garner in-game resources and currency to upgrade weapons free of charge post-Mercenaires DLC. Hopefully, that won’t change.

If you purchased any of these tickets, they would be redeemed via the in-game Merchant and no in-game currency will be required. RE4 has had DLC since launch, such as cosmetic items as well as weapons, an OG soundtrack and an additional treasure map.

What’s more, this is not the first time that Resident Evil has had time-saving microtransactions, not only have all unlockables been acquired with real-world money post the 2019 RE2 remake, but similar microtransactions have been seen in  Resident Evil: Revelations 2 and more.

I’m not a fan of time-savers, as I prefer to unlock all content in-game and as long as a grind isn’t extended to tempt players to spend more money, I’m ok for them to exist, despite not being for me.

The Resident Evil 4 remake is out now for PC, PlayStation and Xbox Series X|S.
