Rockstar Games has apologised for the release of GTA Remastered Trilogy. Reports of bugs, crashes and more have appeared in the bucket load by disgruntled gamers.

Worst still, they’re not wrong. I too am one of those disgruntled gamers who expected more from this highly anticipated remastered collection. Even at a quick glance, the remasters don’t look great visuals and have various dips in framerate. Which to be fair, isn’t acceptable for the oldest game in this trilogy being 20 years old.

Sure, I do think that there has been a lot of over-reaction and people jumping on the hate bandwagon, but it can’t really be argued that this series deserves better. And Rockstar Games have at the very least acknowledged that. In a statement released over the weekend, Rockstar Games said: “Firstly, we want to sincerely apologize to everyone who has encountered issues playing these games.

The Grand Theft Auto series — and the games that make up this iconic trilogy — are as special to us as we know they are to fans around the world,” continued Rockstar Games. “The updated versions of these classic games did not launch in a state that meets our own standards of quality, or the standards our fans have come to expect.

We have ongoing plans to address the technical issues and to improve each game going forward. With each planned update, the games will reach the level of quality that they deserve to be.That first update has now been released and while no cosmetic changes appear to have been made, hopefully, it’s a step in the right direction and will be the first of many updates across the board.

To be fair, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition should never have been released in this state and if Rockstar Games hadn’t been called out on it, then I doubt they’d be so quick to release future patches to bring this collection up to the high expectations.

That all being said, as annoying as this situation can be for gamers expecting more for their money (and rightly so), it doesn’t excuse abuse and harassment. This issue was also addressed in the initial statement from Rockstar Games when talking about the poor launch state of GTA: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition.

It pains us to mention that we are hearing reports of members of the development teams being harassed on social media. We would kindly ask our community to please maintain a respectful and civil discourse around this release as we work through these issues.

Continuing from the statement, Rockstar Games then announced that they would re-release the original versions of GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas. Rockstar Games had removed them previously from digital stores prior to the release of the remastered collection.

While one of the goals of the Definitive Editions was to allow players to enjoy these games on modern platforms for many years to come, we also understand that some of you would still like to have the previous classic versions available for purchase.

Furthermore, Rockstar Games also revealed that anyone that had purchased the remastered collection from the Rockstar Launcher would be gifted the original version of GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas at no extra cost to June 30th, 2022.

Rockstar Games concluded that future updates would arrive to fix the games in the remastered collection. Hopefully visual and performance fixes won’t be far away.

For me personally, this is a very conflicting situation. Because I am really enjoying replaying the games in the collection, however, its issues are hard to ignore. I think by now we’ve all seen enough of the poor state of the remasters. So, with that in mind, I’ll plan to review this collection when they are fixed. Mainly because I’ve seen enough warranted negativity and I want some positivity.
