Finally, after months of speculation, Sony has revealed its subscription service to rival Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass.

The subscription service will be broken into three tiers, each offering various perks and pricing. Each of the three tiers will all offer PlayStation Plus and PS Now, as well as other bits and bobs. The new service will begin this June. The higher tiers that offer games to stream, will also be playable on PC, just like how PS Now worked. If you already sub to PS+ you will have the option to upgrade to the other tiers.

What subscription services will be on offer?

PS Plus Essential – £49.99/$59.99 Per Year or £6.99/$9.99 Per Month

PS Plus Essential is basically your standard PS Plus service that you probably already subscribe to. That’s unless you don’t currently subscribe to PS Plus. This will offer online multiplayer as well as usual monthly PS+ games for PS4 and PS5 included within the cost.

PS Plus Extra – £83.99/$99.99 Per Year or £10.99/$14.99 Per Month

PS Plus Extra will offer all the perks included in PS Plus Essential. However, this will also offer nearly 400 PS4 and PS5 games. Think PS Now, but just for PS4 and PS5. At launch, the line-up will include God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man & Miles Morales, Death Stranding, Returnal, and Mortal Kombat 11. You will also have the option to download games as well as stream them.

PS Plus Premium – £99.99/$119.99 Per Year or £13.49/$17.99 Per Month

PS Plus Premium will offer all the perks included in PS Plus Essential and PS Plus Extra. However, it will offer a total of around 700 games which also include PS1, PS2, PS3 and PSP games.

PS1, PS2 and PSP games are playable via stream or download. PS3 games are playable by stream only. PS Plus Premium will also offer trials on select games.

In my humble opinion, it’s difficult to make a decision on the value of the three tiers, other than PS Plus Essential, as it’s something most of us are already paying for. We’ll be able to better determine its value as more details are revealed.

However, I do find it odd that the premium tier includes PSP, but now PS Vita. It will also be interesting to see if there are any visual and performance upgrades for the retro games, other than an HD TV output.

I also find it a shame that there’s no tier for PS Plus and the retro games, as I’m sure there will be plenty that will have no need to subscribe for PS4 and PS5 games if they already own what games they want.

That being said, we’ll find out in the coming months. You can find more details on the various tiers via the PlayStation Blog.
