Team17 have recently announced that they are backing yet another smaller independent studio in support of This is the Police. The game is the creation of Weappy Studios and this is their first game they have developed in their history. In order to gain funding for the project, Weappy Studios launched a Kickstarter in January and are nearing the end of its campaign, having yet to be funded.

This is the Police is an adventure/strategy game which sees you taking on the role as Jack Boyd, a Police Chief who is 180 days away from retirement. Before he calls it a day, Jack wishes to earn half a million dollars and, in order to do so, he must do it in any way he can. Since he is beyond the thin blue line, he can use this to his advantage and receive bribes, cuts from narcotic deals and weapon trades, as well as many other crimes. It’s up to the player how far Jack will go to get his intended target.

While there is still 6 days to go in the Kickstarter campaign, it seems as though the game is set only for Steam, at the moment. Of the goals offered, Weappy Studios have said that a Linux and Mac version of This is the Police would be created if the Kickstarter amount reached $30k, which is $5k more than the original target. As well as these platforms, the studio also stated that the game would come to the Wii U and PS Vita if it raised more than $55k. Although the original target is yet to be reached, there is still plenty of time to get the remaining money to ensure that the game is safely developed.

Team17 are making a habit of lending their expertise to smaller studios and making them into a success. It seems as though This is the Police is in the exact same situation as The Escapists was a year or so ago, as that game also began on Kickstarter and it has just sold in excess of 250k copies in Early Access. From what we’ve seen of the game so far, it seems to put all the decisions in the control of the player and that’s the way it should be. It seems to speak more about the player’s morality and how far they are willing to go, which is always interesting to see, as you may not know what you would decide in certain situations.
