The next Tomb Raider game is being published by Amazon

The next Tomb Raider game from Crystal Dynamics is being published by Amazon, the retail giant has confirmed.

To be fair, Amazon is far more than a retail giant as it has ventured into movies, TV as well as video games over the years. However, publishing Tomb Raider could be its biggest coup yet in the video game industry.

In May 2022, Embracer Group’s takeover of Square Enix’s western studios and IPs, which not only included Tomb Raider but also Legacy of Kain, Deus Ex and more. The takeover was prior to the announcement that the next Tomb Raider will be powered by Unreal Engine 5.

What’s more, following the Embracer acquisition, Crystal Dynamics also announced that it has control of the Tomb Raider franchise. However, with the added financial backing and the marketing prowess of Amazon, it can only be a good thing for the next adventures of Lara Croft.

“We are excited to announce that Crystal Dynamics has partnered with Amazon Games Studios on the next major entry in the Tomb Raider series, which will continue Lara Croft’s saga in a single-player, story-driven multi-platform adventure,” tweeted Crystal Dynamics.

“Tomb Raider is one of the most beloved IPs in entertainment history,” said Christoph Hartmann, VP of Amazon Games in a statement. “Amazon Games is committed to bringing players games of the highest quality, from the best developers, across all variety of platforms and genres, and we’re honoured by the opportunity to work with this storied developer and franchise.”

“Crystal Dynamics has an extraordinary opportunity following our acquisition by Embracer to redefine what a publishing relationship is for Tomb Raider,” said Scot Amos, studio head of Crystal Dynamics.

Amos continued: “They’re uniquely positioned to rewrite what publishing and development collaborations are, and we’re eager to forge this new path together, starting with building the biggest and best Tomb Raider game yet!”

At this time, there is no news on when the next Tomb Raider will be released, however, it’s probably safe to assume that it’s at least a year or two away. Furthermore, with it being powered by Unreal Engine 5, it’s a sure-fire PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S launch.
