It has been confirmed that future Yakuza games will continue with the turned-based combat that was introduced in Yakuza: Like a Dragon.

When Yakuza: Like a Dragon changed from its free-flowing combat to turn-based, it didn’t go down well with a lot of fans.  In truth, I was one of those fans.

However, when I actually played Yakuza: Like a Dragon, sure the turned-based combat took some getting used to and yeah, I prefer the free-flowing combat.  But once the game got going, it’s a lot of fun and I urge all Yakuza fans to give Like a Dragon a chance.

So going back to the future of the series.  While speaking to IGN, creator Toshihiro Nagoshi and producer Kazuki Hosokawa confirmed that forthcoming entries in the Yakuza series will be sticking with the turn-based combat.

The Yakuza series has been transformed into a turn-based RPG. On the other hand, over the year, Ryu ga Gotoku Studio has accumulated resources and know-how of making flashy and exhilarating action games that are effortless to enjoy.

We decided that we should let our signature action gameplay live on through Lost Judgement.” said the duo.

So there you have it, for better or worse, the Yakuza series will be sticking with turn-based combat for the foreseeable future.  However, the spin-off series Judgment (including the recently announced sequel) will continue to feature the original form of combat.
