Microsoft reportedly turned down the development rights of Marvel Spider-Man before the Sony exclusivity.

Published in a recent book entitled “The Ultimate History of Video Games, Volume 2” by Steven L. Kent, head of Marvel Games, Jay Ong revealed that Microsoft had the option to acquire the rights before Sony claimed them.

As reported by VGC, according to the book, both Microsoft and Sony were offered the rights at the same time, however, it was only Sony that snapped up the opportunity.

Prior to Sony acquiring the rights, they belonged to Activision. Seemingly unhappy with the partnership, Ong told Activision that he would “find a better home” for the IP. Apparently, Activision replied: “Good luck finding your unicorn.

As we know, Sony not only acquired the rights, but Insomniac Games then developed the fantastic Marvel’s Spider-Man, as well as Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Oh, and we’re also getting a Spider-Man sequel and a Wolverine game. So yeah, I guess it worked out quite well in the end.
