Finally, the first major update has been released for the PlayStation 5 which will allow you to transfer PS5 game installs over to the USB extended storage.

This update has been a long time coming since the PS5 released in November 2020.  Many fans had expected such functions to be available at launch, but as they say “better late than never”.

The update will also make several other improvements and add features to the PS5, as well as PS5 and the PS App functionality.

While you currently cannot download PS5 games directly to your extended storage, you can transfer them once they are downloading onto your console.  It’s worth keeping in mind that not all USB extended storage devices will be compatible, to begin with, but more options are to be added at a later date.

New social features have also been added which allows cross-generation Share Play between the PS4 and PS5.  So what this means in a nutshell, is that you can invite your friend that owns a PS4 to play your PS5 game or vice versa.

Other cross-gen Share Play features include the ability to share a screen, pass the controller virtually or pass a second controller virtually to play a co-op game together.  You can also invite your friend to join your game on both PS4 and PS5.

Other quality of life improvements and personalisation options will also arrive to PS5 with the update.  You will now be able to switch between parties and friends, see what there is up to in added detail, and select notifications for friends.

You can now also disable game chat and adjust player volume with added ease, as well as adjusting chat volume for select players in the chat.

Once enabled by developers”, title updates can now be re-downloaded to your games automatically so that the latest update is ready to go for when you fire up your game.  You can be able to hide games in your library, so you can get rid of those old betas and demos appearing on your list.

Other improvements made to the PS5 are being able to zoom into your screen and you can now select the level of screenshots or clips your console captures for Trophies earned.  So if you only want to capture that Gold or above moments, now you can.

The PlayStation App will also get some new features such as being able to manage your PS5 storage via your phone.  However, these features won’t roll out until the coming weeks ahead.  As well as being able to compare friend’s trophies, filter products in the store and add products to your Wishlist.

More information on the update can be found on the PlayStation Blog.
